UP.Labs-Porsche’s newest startup wants to be the Plaid of automotive retail

As serial entrepreneur Joel Milne founded, scaled, and then successfully sold mobile auto repair service startup RepairSmith to AutoNation, he was plagued by a persistent problem.  The automotive retail industry has a communication problem. At less than one and a half inches tall, roughly the same height as a LEGO minifigure, the world’s smallest self-contained bipedal robot can self-start from standstill, walk faster than a half mile per hour, turn, skip, and ascend small steps with just the power of its on-board battery, actuator, and control system. At less than one and a half inches tall, roughly the same height as a LEGO minifigure, the world’s smallest self-contained bipedal robot can self-start from standstill, walk faster than a half mile per hour, turn, skip, and ascend small steps with just the power of its on-board battery, actuator, and control system.[#item_full_content]

Predicting whether or not companies will be successful is crucial for guiding investment decisions and designing effective economic policies. However, past research on high-growth firms—enterprises thought to be key for driving economic development—has typically shown low predictive accuracy, suggesting that growth may be largely random. Does this assumption still hold in the AI era, in which vast amounts of data and advanced analytical methods are now available? Can AI techniques overcome difficulties in predicting high-growth firms? These questions were raised in a chapter I co-authored in the De Gruyter Handbook of SME Entrepreneurship, which reviewed scientific contributions on firm growth prediction with AI methods.Predicting whether or not companies will be successful is crucial for guiding investment decisions and designing effective economic policies. The United States population is older than it has ever been. Today, the country’s median age is 38.9, which is nearly a decade older than it was in 1980. And the number of adults older than 65 is expected to balloon from 58 million to 82 million by 2050. The challenge of caring for the elderly, amid shortages of care workers, rising health care costs, and evolving family structures, is an increasingly urgent societal issue. The United States population is older than it has ever been.
